Herman Miller Environmental Policy
In 1953 Herman Miller’s founder, DJ De Pree, stated «We will be good stewards of the environment».
Since then accountable practice and production has been and always be Herman Miller’s policy.
Behaving responsibly towards the environment is more than just a policy. It’s an attitude that permeates every part of the business.
Every business decision they take is guided by a sense of responsibility to the environment, to the others who live in it and to those who will follow.
Sustainability and commercial success are not mutually exclusive ends; instead they should coexist in a beneficial and happy relationship.
Products
For decades, Herman Miller has been designing products with the environment in mind. By assessing the materials they use, how easy it is to disassemble their products for recycling and how much of the product can be recycled when it reaches the end of its working life, they are incorporating sustainable materials, features and manufacturing processes into their product development.
They also assess the packaging - minimising waste and saving valuable resources.
Places
Herman Miller's HQ in Chippenham, UK, opened in 2006, incorporates best practice in environmental design. They made sure the site had no ecological value; materials came from recycled or sustainable sources; daylight in 75% of the building means less artificial lighting is needed and natural ventilation means there is no air-conditioning.
Water run-off is drained and filtered in a balancing pond and all exterior lighting has been specially designed to reduce light pollution. Outside areas are planted with wild flowers and meadow grass.
All of which means the building is an inspiring place to work and a testament to their commitment to a greener, better world.
Processes
The Herman Miller Production System (HMPS) is the cornerstone of their strategy to contribute to a better environment. This lean approach to production is designed to minimise wasted effort, energy and materials while at the same time managing costs and delivering higher quality.
